How Peer Specialists Fit Into
The Healing and Recovery Model
Peer support specialists are people who have lived experience with a mental health or substance use disorder and are in recovery. Peer support services are designed and delivered by formally trained peer support specialists to promote recovery and resiliency in individuals seeking to begin or supplement their own recovery. Peer support services are offered in a variety of settings, from recovery centers and hospitals to homeless shelters and criminal justice settings. Via Hope: Peer Specialist Training Leaders in Texas and Nationwide
Via Hope has been committed to the mission of changing the way we think about mental and behavioral health since 2010, when we created our first training program for Certified Peer Specialists. We trace our roots to the 2003 final report of the President’s New Freedom Commission Achieving the Promise, which called for fundamentally transforming the nation’s mental health system to a consumer, family, and youth-driven Recovery Model. We continue to provide training and consultation for people in recovery, their family members, youth, and mental health professionals to help make Texas’ mental health system become focused on recovery and resilience.

Del Valle is a community in southeastern Travis Country. While the area is home to a growing number of important businesses and services for the greater Austin area—including the airport and Tesla factory—this small but vibrant community is often under-resourced.
The Garfield Branch of Del Valle Libraries - ETGLD is one of eight libraries participating in our Libraries for Health initiative. This pilot program funds peer support specialists from Via Hope to work in libraries across Central Texas, offering free mental health resources and programming.
“Libraries are one of the few places where you can literally just exist for free. I think that Libraries for Health is a great initiative because we can bring health to a central location where people will come, especially when there's nothing else in the area, because truly there is nothing else in this area.”
–Tina, Garfield Public Library Peer Support Specialist

This past Wednesday, Christina Carney (Via Hope's Training and Curriculum Design Manager) joined Leadership Austin's Essential Program to talk about the role of mental health peer support in Central Texas.
The "Health Challenges Impacting Austin" panel was part of a Health & Environment session where participants gained a deeper understanding and context around the state of health and healthcare, including significant challenges and disparities, and how they can help create more equitable health outcomes in Austin and Central Austin.
Thank you so much for having us, Leadership Austin! It was great to share our work and programming with your community and be part of the health equity conversation.
