Peer Practice: Crisis Support

Peer Practice: Crisis Support is a one-day training that was designed to meet the growing need for more compassionate responses to crises in our communities. Peer Specialists will learn how to use existing peer support practices to better support people in crisis, understand the relationship between trauma and crisis, and to cultivate wellness practices for self-care to prevent burnout. This is a six-hour training that includes information, activities and group discussion.

At the end of this training, participants should be able to:
● Learn the importance of self-care and personal wellness in doing crisis work
● Create strategies for cultivating personal wellness
● Gain tools, techniques and resources for supporting people in crisis
● Recognize the potential for growth that comes from crisis
● Begin to understand the complex relationship between trauma and crisis
● Have an introductory level understanding of being trauma-responsive and healing-centered in crisis support
● Recognize the importance of Peer Specialists working to stay in their Peer role while offering crisis support
● Gain skills to respond to suicidal thoughts and feelings
● Become familiar with resources to support people in crisis
● Gain experience of navigating difficult conversations with partner work and practice

Via Hope training content is provided via Zoom through an online learning platform. Participants will be required to have an active internet connection and be on camera for the majority of the training. Individual computer access is required; participants will not be able to log on in a group environment.

Pre-requisites: None
Eligibility: Peer Specialists who hold an MHPS, RSPS, or RPS credential; Peer Specialists who do not hold a credential, but are working in the field
