Core Training

The Core is a three-day training that will equip participants with the basic knowledge and skills to begin practice as a peer professionals. This training is the first of two required trainings for individuals pursuing certification as a Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS), Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS), or ReEntry Peer Specialist (JI-RPS).
At the end of this training, participants should be able to:
• Define what a peer professional is;
• Describe the principles that underlie peer support practice;
• Describe the basic skills involved in the practice of peer support;
• Employ an ethical decision-making framework to situations where ethical issues may arise in their practice as peer professionals;
• Apply the principles and skills of a peer professional to a variety of situations, including trauma-informed support, crisis situations, and informed consent; and,
• Identify the next steps that they need to take to continue the Texas certification process for peer professionals.
Via Hope training content is provided via Zoom through an online learning platform. Participants will be required to have an active internet connection and be on camera for the majority of the training. Individual computer access is required; participants will not be able to log on in a group environment.
The Mental Health Resource of Texas dba Via Hope does not allow the use of AI (artificial intelligence) software to record Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other virtual meeting platforms hosted by employees of the organization. Additionally, AI is strictly prohibited during any Via Hope facilitated training.
Prerequisites: Peer Specialist Orientation Materials (Available at Registration Link)
Eligibility: Adults (18+) who have lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use, or incarceration
