How Peer Specialists Fit Into
The Healing and Recovery Model

Peer support specialists are people who have lived experience with a mental health or substance use disorder and are in recovery. Peer support services are designed and delivered by formally trained peer support specialists to promote recovery and resiliency in individuals seeking to begin or supplement their own recovery. Peer support services are offered in a variety of settings, from recovery centers and hospitals to homeless shelters and criminal justice settings. Via Hope: Peer Specialist Training Leaders in Texas and Nationwide

Via Hope has been committed to the mission of changing the way we think about mental and behavioral health since 2010, when we created our first training program for Certified Peer Specialists. We trace our roots to the 2003 final report of the President’s New Freedom Commission Achieving the Promise, which called for fundamentally transforming the nation’s mental health system to a consumer, family, and youth-driven Recovery Model. We continue to provide training and consultation for people in recovery, their family members, youth, and mental health professionals to help make Texas’ mental health system become focused on recovery and resilience.
