The Recovery Institute is presented in partnership between Via Hope, Texas Department of State Health Services Mental Health and Substance Abuse Division and The University of Texas at Austin Center for Social Work Research. The overall purpose of the Recovery Institute is to promote system transformation by (1) helping organizations develop organizational culture and practices that support and expect recovery, and (2) promoting consumer/youth/family voice in the transformation process and the future, transformed mental health system. An overview of the 2012 Recovery Institute application process is listed below. It is very important that you read the supplemental materials attached before completing the online application(s) so that you are familiar with the Institute “Activity Levels” and the requirements and expectations of each. Recovery Institute Activity Levels:
Level 1:  Recovery Awareness Building Activities
Level 2:  Recovery Leadership Academy
Level 3:  Recovery Oriented Organizational Change Initiative
Level 4:  Person Centered Recovery Planning Implementation

Any organization or individual may sign up to participate in Level 1 activities.

Participation in Levels 2, 3, and 4 are competitive. Your organization must meet initial requirements (see attachment: RI Requirements) and submit an application to be considered for participation.  Your organization may apply for all three levels but may be selected at most for only two of the three activity levels. Level 3 and 4 require more intensive effort and if your organization applies for both, you will only be eligible to be selected for participation in one.

Each application must be completed by the agency’s Executive Sponsor, which is defined as the individual in your organization who has the authority to support change from the top and has committed to supporting your Recovery Institute activities. The Executive Sponsor can be the Executive Director, Superintendent, Director of Mental Health Services or someone in a similar leadership role.

Level 1: Recovery Awareness Building
Anyone in your organization may participate in Level 1 activities. There are two main components of the awareness-building efforts in the Recovery Institute. A series of webinars, as well as a book club (Recovery Reads), will serve to increase awareness surrounding recovery and system transformation.

There are no requirements to participate in the Recovery Awareness Building.  Click on the link below to indicate interest and to receive more information about Awareness Building activities for you and/or staff members at your organization. Although all competitive applications for FY2012 have been closed, individuals can sign up for Recovery Awareness Building at any time.

Level 2: Recovery Institute Leadership Academy
The Recovery Institute Leadership Academy engages formal and emerging leaders in a process of learning about mental health transformation, how to cultivate a culture of learning in organizations, and key issues related to recovery-oriented practice.  This initiative serves as a key entry point for organizations that have not participated in previous Via Hope learning communities, although we also welcome leaders from organizations that have participated.  The academy is primarily designed for participants to connect via webinar and conference call, but also incorporates an in-person launch event and regional seminars that promote networking and deeper engagement with the content. This initiative—including the 2-day seminars – is intended for leadership of local mental health providers, advocacy organizations, and community partners.

If you meet the requirements outlined in the attached RI Requirements document and would like to apply for the Leadership Academy, click on the link below.

Up to five (5) organizations may be accepted for participation.

Level 4: Person Centered Recovery Planning Implementation (PCRP)
Person Centered Planning has been described as “a collaborative process resulting in a recovery oriented treatment plan; is directed by consumers and produced in partnership with care providers and natural supporters for treatment and recovery; supports consumer preferences and a recovery orientation” Adams & Grieder, 2005). A pilot of Person Centered Recovery Planning will be implemented at two provider organizations during FY2012, a partnered hospital and center. The ONE Hospital and ONE CENTER partnership selection will be required in the application.  After an initial pilot phase, we intend to open the application process to new organizations for implementation at new sites.
