PIR Voice Project

There is national recognition of the need for increased peer leadership in the field of mental health. People in Recovery (PIRs) offer many strengths as leaders, including insight into how mental health care can be improved so that recovery becomes possible for everyone.

Patricia Deegan describes peer staff as “disruptive innovators.” She writes, “We are the evidence that it is possible to live our lives, not just our diagnoses.  Just by showing up at work we raise the bar on service outcomes…Recovery is the goal.” As the demand for PIRs in the workforce continues to increase it is important that PIRs be prepared to take on leadership positions, including supervisory and managerial roles in provider organizations, serving on boards and committees, leading and starting peer-run organizations, leadership in education and training and working as advocates and activists for social change.

The Via Hope PIR Voice Project is a peer training and coaching program designed to increase leadership capacity and cross-state connections of people in recovery in Texas. Upon completion of the program participants will be equipped with leadership tools, practices, and supports and will be prepared to influence and lead change efforts that both change attitudes and beliefs about people with lived experience and directly impact the Texas mental health system. Participants will complete a series of dynamic training courses and will be engaged in a coaching process that will support them as they develop their own projects that will benefit and enrich their communities. The PIR Voice Project will complement many of the statewide efforts Via Hope is already making to empower and engage emerging leaders across the state who have lived experience with mental health challenges.

The application for the FY2017-18 PIR Voice Project is now open. Applications will be accepted until the extended deadline Friday, March 3 at 5:00 PM CST.
