Peer Specialist Training and Certification
Certified Peer Specialists are individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental illness, are in recovery, and use their life experiences to assist other individuals in their own recovery. The activities that peer specialists are engaged in are referred to as peer supports. Certified peer specialists typically provide peer supports as an employee of or contractor to a provider of mental health services.
Peer supports are consumer centered services with a rehabilitation and recovery focus. They are intended to help consumers cope with and manage psychiatric symptoms. Peer supports help consumers identify and use community resources and increase their community living skills. Peer specialists’ activities are intended to help a consumer achieve the identified goals or objectives in his or her individualized treatment plan. Peer specialists may work individually with consumers or in a group setting.
